To further restoration efforts on the Washington Harbor Schoolhouse and Captain Morris House, two of the oldest structures in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley, the Museum & Arts Center launched a preservation project on May 1, 2005. The total cost of this project is estimated at $82,972. To date, the MAC has raised nearly $30,000 through monetary donations, fundraising, donated materials, and volunteered labor.

The MAC was recently awarded a Heritage Capital Projects Fund (HCPF) grant for the 2010-11 biennial by the Heritage Resource Council worth $26,928. We are now seeking monetary funds to match that amount, which is necessary in order to receive the grant as well as cover the total project expense. We also welcome in-kind donations of materials and/or labor from individuals and local businesses.

The grant funding has been allocated toward the following repairs: chimney replacements, restoration and repair of windows and exterior walls on both structures, and a porch restoration and roof replacement for the Captain Morris House. The end date for this restoration project is May 1, 2011.

If you would like to make a tax-deductible charitable contribution to help fund this project and preserve two irreplaceable pieces of Sequim-Dungeness Valley history, please contact MAC Executive Director Katherine Vollenweider at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. This HCPF grant project is another step toward the MAC's long-term plan of fully restoring the Washington Harbor Schoolhouse and Captain Morris House, including outfitting each with applicable historical artifacts from the MAC Collection. In forming this new "Heritage Park," each building will serve as an interactive living history exhibit with which to tell visitors the story of the two early valley communities of Washington Harbor and New Dungeness.
